Causes of Snoring

If you’re someone that snores or are someone trying to get a good night’s sleep next to someone that snores, you would do well to consider the many causes of snoring in order to address this problem effectively.  If you’re not clear about just what it is that is making a person snore you can try remedy after remedy with no results, and while there are many common causes of snoring there can be different causes for each person.

Snoring is caused when a person is breathing through their mouth and this air causes the tissue of the mouth and throat to vibrate loudly.  We also typically call other noises they make throughout the night snoring, even though technically they’re not; this includes snorting, wheezing, choking, gasping, and so on.  Typical causes of snoring are sleeping on one’s back so that the mouth falls open and the air going over the throat dries out that tissue, making it more likely to vibrate.  Excess body weight and obesity are also quite often at the root of snoring as this extra body fat can rest on the neck and close off this passageway, making that tissue more likely to vibrate.  Some overweight is also more likely to make all those other noises as well since they can have problems breathing as a general rule.

Dryness in the air and in one’s sinuses are also common causes of snoring.  When the sinus cavities and throat are adequately moist they are less likely to vibrate, but dry skin and tissue makes them “rattle” that much more.  A person might have dry mouth just naturally because of being dehydrated, but alcohol is a drying agent of the mouth and throat, and sleeping in a dry atmosphere can also bring about snoring.

Once you understand the most common causes of snoring then you will be a better position to get some ideas for how to address them.  Using pillows to prop yourself up to keep you on your side and not on your back will keep your mouth closed.  A good humidifier is important especially in dry climates or the winter months.  Smoking too is one of those causes of snoring that people often don’t think about since it dries out the mouth and throat and damages the entire sinus and respiratory system.  You might not always be able to stop snoring completely but by understanding these basic concepts you can certainly reduce its occurrence.
